Let’s set the scene: you’re driving home from work on a beautiful Friday afternoon in the spring, with the windows open, music blasting, and not a cloud in the sky – it’s basically the perfect day. You’re appreciating the little things and are feeling excited and ready for an epic weekend. This is the main character energy we’re talking about today.
It can be easy to take the little things for granted in our lives. To get caught up in the daily motions of life where we only really appreciate what’s happening when something changes. But what if we were to treat every day as the gift it is?
When you stop and think about how much actually had to align perfectly for you to be alive, you can truly begin to realize just how much of a miracle life really is. Not only did our parents have to have you at the perfect time, but your grandparents had to have them at the perfect time, and their parents have to have them at the perfect time – so on and so forth to the start of time. They had to survive disease, war, famine, the list goes on and on. Now, depending on your faith, there can be a ton of other things at play, but let’s strictly look at the numbers. The odds of you being born was 400 trillion to 1 (that’s 400,000,000,000,000 to 1). Let that sink in for a second. Life is a complete miracle, and we are gifted this small, finite time to enjoy it.
We just went through a year of pandemic life, lockdowns and quarantine which has sort of made daily life feel a little bit… mundane. Dare I even say… boring? It was an important sacrifice to keep ourselves and others safe, but it did create a sort of loop of doing the same thing over and over again, which may have caused our days to feel like they blended together. And while regular life seems to be picking back up in the US with the vaccine rollout, many other parts of the world (including our home, Canada) still have a little ways to go. So if we’re not careful, we can continue to feel stuck in this endless loop of waiting for restrictions to loosen up.
This is where looking at yourself as the main character comes into play.
The Main Character
When you stop and think about it, you are already at the centre of your own universe – every interaction you have daily is through your own perspective. A good example of this is in a concert: if a shorter person and a taller person go to the same concert, they’ll likely have different experiences based on their own perspective. This means that both people will leave with their own narrative of what happened. The short person may feel like it was the worst concert ever, whereas the taller person may have had the time of their life. The idea of being the main character of your own life is not about being selfish or somehow thinking that your life is better than others, it just means you’re narrating it for yourself as you go.
So in this sense, you are already the main character of your own life simply because it’s yours. It doesn’t mean that you don’t care for other people, that you’re selfish, or that you somehow think that you’re better than others – it just means that you’re narrating for yourself as you go.

To take it a step further, to show up as the main character of your life means to actively live your life instead of falling into the motions. This doesn’t mean that you should quit your job or blow your retirement savings on a boat, but it does mean to start appreciating daily life.
- Drink your coffee outside, read in the window while it rains, hike when it’s sunny.
- Go after the promotion.
- Find hobbies you can work on daily.
- Fill your Saturdays with your loved ones.
- Fill your Sundays with rest.
- Go for a walk.
- Look up at the clouds.
- Dance in your living room.
- Wear the bikini.
- Burn the candle you’ve been saving.
- Take yourself out to dinner.
- Sleep in.
- Dress up.
- Drive to the beach.
- Constantly work on becoming the best version of yourself.
- Spend more time living your own life than you spend watching life unfold on a screen.
And most importantly, focus on creating the life of your dreams where you appreciate the little things and feel excited about the bigger things.
The ultimate sign of the main character is when you look back on your life and see a life that was lived, not a life that constantly waited for things to perfectly align to feel fulfilled.
This idea of being the main character of your own life has definitely taken off on TikTok over the past few months. Some people have taken this to literally mean acting like you’re the main character, which includes things such as acting mysterious in a coffee shop or locking eyes with someone in the grocery store. It is important to remember that we don’t live in a movie, so we need to maintain a healthy balance.
Being the main character doesn’t mean that you should disregard reality or the lives and interests of others, it doesn’t mean that you should be doing things for a show, and it doesn’t mean that you should be giving up everything that you love.
What it does mean, however, is that you shouldn’t be waiting until things are perfect to start feeling worthy of a happy life. To love the life you live now, regardless of what you dream of in the future. To work hard on your goals, rest well, and play often.
Live your life for yourself.
