There are a ton of people who seem to swear by waking up at 5 am, which poses the (very valid) question: why? Does waking up at 5 am actually make an impact on our lives? Is it actually worth doing?

Here’s the rundown on waking up at 5 am: it’s really just what you make it. You can wake up at 5 am and basically just twiddle your thumbs until the time you normally wake up, in which case, you may prefer to just stay in bed. Or, you can use it as a time to prioritize your self-care, which is what most people prefer to do.

Why wake up at 5 am?

5 am gives you a couple of uninterrupted hours before the world wakes up to focus on your own needs. You can use this time to do the things that you’re too busy to do during the day, or too tired to think about at the end of the day. A lot of people use this time to meditate, workout, read, and/or set intentions for the day. Think about it as a time that you can focus on yourself and accomplish your goals.

The other thing worth noting about waking up at 5 am is that it sets the tone for your entire day. Think about how you feel when you wake up and feel rushed: it essentially sets this overwhelmed or stressed tone for the day. However, when you are able to start the day with your needs met, you are essentially giving yourself the best opportunity to thrive during the day.

How To Wake Up at 5 am

Start slowly

The best way to make pretty much any habit stick is to start slowly. Let’s face it, if you’re used to waking up at 8 am, the shift to waking up at 5 am is going to be a major shock on your system. If you are wanting this to be a long-term and sustainable shift, start by slowly waking up earlier. Not only will this allow your body to adjust to waking up earlier, but it will also help to get you into bed earlier as well.

Pick up an alarm clock

Okay, this one is actually super important, so don’t knock it right away. From the moment we wake up, to the moment we go to bed, we are glued to our phones and rely on them for basically everything. Getting an alarm clock not only is easier to wake up to (no seriously, it is), but it also allows you to take a second before you start scrolling. Set a bedtime

In order to feel well-rested and productive, you’re going to need to make sure you’re getting enough sleep, which means you’re going to need to go to bed earlier. Going to bed earlier may feel challenging, especially at the start, but stick with it. Over time, things will get easier and start to feel like second nature. 

Make things as easy as possible

5 am is early, dark, and just not the time to be fiddling with things, so make it as easy as possible for yourself. This will be different for everyone but it could include setting your coffee the night before, laying out some clothes if you plan on going to the gym or practicing yoga, or just making sure your home is tidied so you don’t need to worry about it when you wake up. Doing little things for yourself the night before is such a great way to make sure you start things off on the right foot in the morning.

Establish a routine

Pulling yourself out of bed at 5 am for the sake of doing it is going to be so much more difficult than pulling yourself out of bed at 5 am for a purpose. Establish a routine that can do two specific things for you: 1) make you actually want to wake up in the morning, and 2) is going to get your day started off on the right foot.

Get out of bed immediately

Do not pass go, do not collect $200, do not press snooze, do not scroll for hours and hours. The hardest part about waking up at 5 am is getting out of bed: once you’re up, everything gets easier. When your alarm goes off in the morning, give yourself a second to open your eyes and find your bearing, but then you need to just get out of bed. The longer you wait, the more likely your bed will talk you into staying, and the harder it will be to get up. 

Focus on your mindset

We could sit here and give you every single tip in the book, but the reality is that it’s almost entirely going to come from your mindset. Your bed is going to feel extra warm, it’s going to be dark, and the snooze button will look extremely tempting. The number one thing that you need to do when it comes to waking up at 5 am is to listen to Shia LaBeouf, and just do it.
