Firstly, let’s talk about goals

Whether or not we set official goals, it’s safe to assume that we all have them: we have things we wish to accomplish, dreams for the future, or ideas we would like to manifest. In fact, we generally accomplish things all of the time without even batting an eye. We may set a goal of what we’re going to make for dinner and then accomplish it without thinking twice, or a goal to wake up at 7 am for work and then do it effortlessly. Larger goals will likely take longer and require extra planning and effort, the reality is that you are already accomplishing so much in a day, and you are capable of achieving your wildest goals. Today, we’re going to set you up with the foundation to do so.

How To Make Your Goals Stick

1. Start small

Looking at a large goal can feel pretty overwhelming, daunting, and possibly even unattainable. You may not know where to begin, it could involve changing multiple areas in your life, and it may even be difficult to keep going when things start to get tough. If you are wanting something to stick with long-term, you may find it beneficial to start with small changes. For example, if your goal is to wake up at 5 am, but you are currently waking up around 8 am, start by waking up at 7:30 and go from there.

2. Go slowly

Again, if you want your goals to stick, focus on small changes that will create habits. Once you have broken your goal up into small changes, tackle it slowly – treat it as a marathon, not a sprint. The slower you take it, the more accustomed you will be to the changes, and the easier it will be to make them stick.

3. Identify limiting beliefs

Our mindset plays a huge role in everything we do – literally everything. Without even realizing it, we all have an internal dialogue that can either cheer us on or sabotage our goals and dreams. Most of the time, this internal dialogue is trying to keep us safe, but it can end up getting in the way of the changes we want to make in our lives. Pay attention to your thoughts and what you say to/about yourself to really zone into your limiting beliefs to identify where your mindset is at. For example, if you constantly are saying things such as “I am not a morning person; I never get out of bed; I work best at night,” chances are you will struggle more when your alarm goes off in the morning.

4. Be patient

Every overnight success was years in the making – a major change takes time. Don’t be so hard on yourself if things don’t happen right away, or if you slip up along the way. Stay focused on your goals and keep going.

5. Look at other areas in your life

They say that how you do one thing is a representation of how you do everything, so take a look at how you go about other areas in your life. Do you keep going when things get tough, or do you stop immediately? Do you believe in yourself, or do you feel like you aren’t worthy? Get in the habit of believing in yourself in all areas of your life by not letting yourself stand in your way.

6. Stay dedicated

The reality is that no change happens without its hiccups. When things go wrong, or mistakes happen, or when things get tough, stay dedicated to your goals. Overcoming obstacles and staying dedicated to your goals will leave you feeling like you can accomplish literally anything you set your mind to.

7. Remain flexible

Part of staying dedicated means remaining flexible with yourself and with your goals. Life happens, things come up, and sometimes our goals take a little longer or get pushed to the side temporarily. Focus on being flexible with yourself and pivoting if necessary, as opposed to giving up altogether. Slow progress is still progress.

8. Focus on the bigger picture

It can be so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day struggles or feeling like things are taking too long, that we forget to look at the bigger picture. Get crystal clear on what it is you wish to accomplish, and lock your attention onto it. It will be easier to stay focused on the day-to-day tasks when you remember what you are working towards.

9. Ask for help

Look to experts who are where you want to be – ask them for help. Yes, this could look like speaking with someone directly, but this could also look like reading a book or listening to a podcast from someone who is where you want to be. Experts can anticipate the struggles you may face and help you navigate your way quicker and more effectively.

10. Believe in yourself

The number one thing you need to do, above all else, is to believe in yourself. Believe that you can accomplish literally anything you set your mind to. Believe that you are worthy of all that your heart desires. Believe that you are just as capable as anyone else to accomplish your goals. Believe that you can, and you will be set up for greatness.
